1st May, Late Afternoon

A cool breeze swayed the blinds that covered the hospital windows. Ivy squinted her eyes. She found herself on a white bed in a hospital. She glanced around. No one was there. On her left, there was a large window with the blinds partially drawn to let the sunlight inside. On the other side was a hazy glass door through which she could faintly see some people passing by the corridor.

She moved a little and felt a sharp tinge of pain at the back of her head. It lasted only for a second. Suddenly, the image of that man seared through her. She couldn’t forget him. At the same time, she saw someone standing outside the glass door. Moments later, the person stepped inside the room. It was Natalie. She rushed to her. Holding Ivy’s hands, she asked, ‘Are you alright?’

‘Yeah. I am fine,’ Ivy replied weakly.

One doctor and a nurse followed Natalie.

‘Can she leave?’ Natalie asked the doctor.

‘It would be great if she rests for a while. We can permit her to leave after a few hours,’ the doctor replied.

‘No. I am fine…,’ Ivy’s statement was cut short as she again felt the pain in her head.

‘Please lie down,’ the nurse said.

‘You have had an accident,’ said the doctor.

The last thing Ivy remembered was that her car had run into a van at the side of the road.

‘But, I am fine. I want to go home,’ Ivy insisted.

‘You need rest, as the doctor said. We can go after some time,’ replied Natalie.

‘We need to give you some medicines,’ said the doctor, turning to Ivy.

The doctor told the dosage to the nurse and left.

Natalie turned to Ivy and asked, ‘What happened while you were driving?’

Ivy looked at her. She didn’t want to tell anything to Natalie.

‘I was lost in some disturbing past thoughts. And…I don’t know when my car ran into that van.’ She turned her face away towards the window.

‘It’s okay now,’ Natalie replied, holding her hand. She didn’t want to ask Ivy any more questions that might upset her.

The nurse asked Natalie to leave the room for some time as Ivy had to be administered some medication.

Natalie went out. Ivy slept after the medicines had been administered.

A few hours later, Natalie and Ivy drove back home in Jamie’s car.

‘What about your car?’ Ivy asked.

‘The car’s in the garage,’ replied Natalie.

Reaching home, Ivy slept after having a light supper.
